Fabulous postal scale or letter scale. Made in Birmingham by the silversmith brothers J&E RATCLIFF in the 19th century. Unlike most postal scales of the time, the two pans are oval. These types of scales were used in post offices from the mid-19th century, when the cost of postage began to depend on the weight of the mail.
