Victorian blue stoneware relief moulded porcelain jug with pewter lid.

A beautiful old Victorian blue stoneware jug. Decorated in relief and moulded in two parts. Hand-applied and hand-modelled handle in the form of a branch or vine. Pewter lid. The exterior has scenes of an English hunt. The interior is enamelled and shiny. The lower part of the base is engraved with a reference. In very good condition. Relief moulded jugs were very popular in mid-19th century households, where they were used for water, beer, milk and other liquids that can now be kept in bottles, cans or plastic jars. The glaze takes advantage of the way coloured clays show the moulded ornamentation clearly, while the stoneware is durable enough for everyday use.
