Cartier SA is a French watch and jewellery brand founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, part of the Swiss luxury goods group Richemont. Cartier is a watch manufacture, as many of its watches have in-house mechanisms.
The corporation is named after the Cartier family of jewellers – whose control ended in 1964 – who were known for creating several famous pieces, including the Bestiary diamond necklace – made in the 1920s for Indian maharaja Yadavindra Singh-1 and the first practical wristwatch, the Santos, in 1904. Cartier SA’s headquarters are located in Paris.
The company has catered to a long list of celebrities and royalty, in fact, one of the Princes of Wales referred to Cartier as “”the jewellers of kings, the kings of jewellers””. Cartier was commissioned to make twenty-seven tiaras for the coronation of the new king. King Edward VII of the United Kingdom was crowned in 1902, and two years later he honoured the company with the Royal Warrant of the British Royal Family. Similar orders continued from different countries, such as Spain, Portugal, Russia, Thailand, Greece, Serbia, Belgium, Romania, Egypt and Albania, as well as the House of Orleans and the Principality of Monaco.
