The Willow pattern is a distinctive and elaborate chinoiserie pattern used on ceramic tableware. It became popular in late 18th-century England when, in its standard form, it was developed by English ceramic artists who combined and adapted motifs inspired by fashionable hand-painted blue-and-white ware imported from the Qing dynasty of China. Their creation came at a time when mass production of decorative ware, in Stoke-on-Trent and elsewhere, was already using engraved and printed enamel transfers, rather than hand-painting, for the application of decorations to standardised vessels (transfer ceramics). Initially, many Chinese-inspired landscape patterns were produced in this way, both on bone china and on white or pearlescent earthenware. The Willow pattern became the most popular and persistent of these, and in various permutations has remained in production to this day. The background colour is typically white and the image blue, but several factories have used other colours in monochrome shades and there are Victorian versions with hand-applied polychrome colours on simple outline transfers. In the United States of America, the pattern is commonly known as Blue Willow.
