Johann Nepomuk Mäzel (Mazel, Mälzel, Malzel or Maelzel) (15 August 1772 – 21 July 1838) was a German mechanic and inventor at the Viennese court, credited with inventions such as the hearing aid, designed for Beethoven, and the panharmonicon, a musical instrument for which Beethoven’s work *Wellington’s Victory* was originally intended to be composed in 1813, although it was eventually rewritten for orchestra. He did not invent the metronome, as the true inventor was Dietrich Nikolaus Windel, but Mäzel did register it as he was a compatriot of Dietrich’s. He became the owner of the automaton ‘The Turk’ following the death of its inventor, Wolfgang von Kempelen. This automaton was supposedly capable of playing chess and was a sensation in its day, although it was eventually proven to be a fraud.
