Satsuma (薩摩焼 satsuma-yaki), sometimes known as “Satsuma porcelain” is a type of porcelain from Japan. It originated in the 6th century, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and is still produced today. Although the term can be used to describe a wide variety of pottery types, the best-known type of Satsuma porcelain is ivory-coloured, with smooth glazes, elaborate polychrome motifs and gold decorations.
