The sextant is an instrument for measuring angles between two objects such as two points on a coast or a star – traditionally, the Earth’s Sun – and the horizon. By knowing the elevation of the sun and the time of day, the latitude at which the observer is located can be determined. The operation of the sextant is based on the optical principle of double reflection, which states: “If a ray of light undergoes two reflections in the same plane, the angle between its first and last direction is equal to twice the angle formed by the two reflecting surfaces. Originally used by ancient astronomers, the alidade was introduced in the West in the Middle Ages, and was quickly adapted for navigation.
