Trotting races are an equestrian sport in which the participating horses must keep trotting while pulling a very light cart called a sulky, on which the jockey or jockey is situated. In the Balearic Islands, trotting is an amateur sport with strong social roots. Races are held on a weekly basis at the five racecourses of the archipelago.
The body in charge of organising these races is the Balearic Trotting Federation, a member of the European Trotting Union based in Paris. In the Balearic Islands there is a semi-patriotic breed, the Spanish trotter, which arose from the importation of French and American stallions that were crossed with local mares.
