Josep Coll i Bardolet (Ripollès, 1912 – Valldemossa, 2007)
Josep Coll Bardolet was born in Ripollès (Girona) in 1912. In 1927 his family moved to Vic where he began his studies at the Municipal School of Drawing and worked as a painter and decorator. In 1935 he enrolled at the Escola Superior de Paisatge in Olot. In 1936 he crossed the border and settled in Tours (France) where he began to study at the École des Beaux Arts. In 1939 he returned to Barcelona and travelled to Mallorca, where he exhibited and lived for a few seasons. During this period he learnt engraving techniques. In 1943 he settled permanently in Valldemosa. In the 1940s, Coll Bardolet began to travel and exhibit all over Europe. In 1964, due to the painter’s deep love for choral music, he began to sponsor concerts in Torrent de Pareis (Mallorca). Between 1968 and 1972 he was awarded the Medal for Tourist Merit of the Balearic Islands and was named “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the Government of the French Republic. In 1980 an anthological exhibition was held in the Lonja de Palma and in 1987 he was declared an adopted son of Valldemosa. In 2005 the Coll Bardolet Cultural Foundation was established. In 2007 he was named an illustrious son of Valldemosa and died on the 30th of July of the same year.
