Born in Athens towards the end of the 5th century BC, Xenophon is the author of an extensive and diverse oeuvre in which his interest in history and politics predominates, although he is also noted for his interest in technical questions related to the world of hunting and horsemanship. The Book of Horsemanship is undoubtedly his best treatise The best technical treatise on technical horsemanship in antiquity and, together with The Commander of Cavalry, forms one of the most important works of all antiquity on the world of horsemanship. Considered – until the discovery in 1931 of a Hittite text from 1360 BC – to be the oldest surviving source on horsemanship, The Book of Horsemanship basically deals with the selection, care and training of horses. Written around 350 BC and divided into twelve chapters, many of the questions it raises are still relevant today, which makes it an essential work for anyone interested in the world of horses and for anyone interested in the world of horses. The volume presents the critical edition of the original text compared with the Catalan translation, suitably annotated. It also includes an extensive and well-documented introduction to the work and to the history of horsemanship, an equestrian appendix and some illustrations. The volume has been curated by Dr. Guillem Gracià Mur, who has also translated Xenofont’s Cinegetico for the Bernat Metge collection.
