The seventh volume of Euripides’ Tragedies presents two of the Athenian playwright’s most surprising tragedies. In the Hèlena Euripides changes the traditional myth about the figure of Hèlena to talk about the relationship between truth, lies and appearance, a theme very present in the philosophical discussions of classical Athens. The Ion, on the other hand, delves into the question of identity through the figure of this son of Apollo and Creüsa – a descendant of the Athenian royal line through his mother’s side – who is unaware of his origins. Euripides takes advantage of this to question one of the Athenian founding myths, that of autochthony, which marks the right of citizenship in the city of Athens. The tragedies are presented with a careful edition and translation in verse by the Hellenist Jaume Almirall, who has also written the preliminary notices.
